About Meerkat Media:

Meerkat Media is a media production company co-op and arts collective, committed to making artful and thought-provoking films through a non-hierarchical collaborative process, located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. We produce both independent and commissioned work, ranging from documentary features and music videos to web videos for publishers, universities, news magazines and non-profits. Our work emphasizes narrative storytelling, visual craft, and a dedication to the highest production value. You can see samples of our work here.

Our production company is currently made up of 8 worker-owners who collaboratively run the business and fill most of the key roles on the films we produce. However, during busy times, we sometimes bring in outside filmmakers to produce, shoot, run sound, or edit on individual projects, and we’re currently looking to expand that freelancer pool. We don’t guarantee a minimum amount of work to the freelancers we work with, but we do our best to establish a respectful working relationship with all of our collaborators, and always pay a fair, industry-standard rate, regardless of the project’s budget or scope. Additionally, we hope to expand our worker-owner group by 1-2 people over the next year, and will look to our freelancer pool for new members.

Who we’re looking to meet:

Our ideal collaborators are experienced filmmakers with advanced skills and interest in multiple areas including producing, shooting, and editing, and who are interested in working with a wide range of clients, many of whom are in alignment with social justice causes. Given our current slate of projects and internal capacity, we’re especially on the look-out for strong documentary cinematographers as well as producers/editors. We shoot on Canon C300’s and C100’s, edit in Adobe Premiere and FCPX. Most importantly, we are looking for people who work well with others. Our style is deeply collaborative, so good listening and communication skills are just as important to us as your creative and technical abilities.

Additional, “great to have” skills include:

  • Graphic design
  • Animation
  • Sound recording, mixing and design
  • Advanced color correction
  • WordPress
  • Music composition
  • Strong writing skills (especially grant-writing)
  • Fluency in non-English languages (especially Spanish)
  • Experience with cooperatives, collectives and/or democratic process
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice work

If you’re interested in learning more about the co-op and running a cooperative business, we’re especially interested in hearing from you. If you have any particular questions about this opportunity, let us know.
