December brings snow, celebration, and the annual collaboration by a bunch of filmmakers to produce the Meerkat Media Holiday Card! This year we experimented with an editing rule: no single cut can be longer than half a second. See how we realize it, see where we break the rule, and see Brooklyn in its particular holiday glory. Following it’s recent premiere, STAGES was awarded the top two documentary awards at the HBO New York International Latino Film Festival: BEST DOCUMENTARY and AUDIENCE AWARD for best documentary.
THE MOVIE: In New York City’s changing Lower East Side, a group of older Puerto Rican women and inner-city youth come together to create an original play out of the stories of their lives. Weaving together themes of immigration, evolution, aging and coming of age, Stages offers an intimate portrait of an unlikely ensemble, transformed by the liberating power of their own stories.
THE MAKERS: Collaboratively directed by twelve people, Stages is the Meerkat Media Collective’s first feature-length film. Since 2005, Meerkat Media has also produced over twenty short films, which have been featured in film festivals and screenings nationally and internationally. Through skill sharing and collective authorship, Meerkat Media strives to create works with a non-hierarchical and inclusive creative process.
