Kumbh Mela is an ancient Hindu pilgrimage where hundreds of thousands come to ritually bathe in the waters near the confluence of the Ganges and the Yamuna Rivers. At the festival, religious orders called akharas set up camps along the river. After years of advocacy, Kinnar Akhara is the first transgender camp officially allowed at Kumbh Mela. Kinnar are third-gender people who are considered demigods in Hinduism. Until 2015, being kinnar was a crime in India.
