Meerkat Media Collective – Open Call 2023
MEERKAT MEDIA COLLECTIVE IS LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS!
The work and resources of the collective are primarily focused on media making. Although the Meerkat Media Collective has traditionally been a space most associated with documentary, many collective members engage in other forms of media making as well and we are looking to expand and nourish our diverse collective practices this year by especially encouraging applicants with the following practices to apply: Narrative Film, Video Art and Installation, Sound Art, Creative Non-Fiction and Design, Animation/VFX.
What We Offer:
Members have access to our work space at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, provide feedback and support for each other’s work, have access to shared production and post-production equipment, attend an annual creative retreat, and receive a modest monetary stipend of $500.
How We Operate:
This is a self-governed collective, operating through a well-developed consensus process. We facilitate our own meetings, participate in working groups, have bi-weekly feedback and skill share gatherings, organize an annual retreat in Upstate New York, and are expected to attend robust organizational meetings quarterly. We usually have an open call every two years, membership cycles follow that structure with the opportunity to extend indefinitely or opt-out when desired.
Meerkat Media Collective is affiliated with the Meerkat Media Coop, a worker-owned production company. Over the last 18 years the Meerkat Media Coop and Collective have produced feature documentaries, fiction films, music videos and dozens of artful short films prioritizing a collaborative process that values diverse experience and expertise. We support thoughtful and provocative stories that reflect a complex world. Since our founding in 2005, our work has been broadcast on HBO, PBS, and many other networks, screened at festivals worldwide, including Sundance, Tribeca, Rotterdam, Ambulante, Amman, Santiago Alvarez, and CPH:Dox, and been exhibited at galleries including the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Arts Center at Governors Island, Lower Gallery, MassArt Museum, La Mama La Galleria, and the List Center at MIT.
Applications are due by 11:59pm on Sunday, October 15th, 2023.
Only a few spaces are available, and decisions are all made by the current members of the collective. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to meet with collective members in mid-late November 2023, and final decisions will be made by the end of- December 2023. New Members would begin in Jan 2024.
