ONCE UPON A TIME a friend from Sarah Lawrence was working one summer at a restaraunt on Cape Cod or something, and developed a rapport with her regular customers. One of these was a nice old man who ate soup a lot and always tipped really generously. 

The end of the season came, as it must, and the old man announced that he was leaving for the winter. My friend wished him well and, after he&#039;d gone, remarked to a co-worker that he&#039;d been a friendly customer. 

&quot;Yeah,&quot; her co-worker said, &quot;That Howard Zinn is such a nice man.&quot;
